CASTA EXEMPLARY TEACHER AWARD CRITERIA

 

Criteria for all Awards

 

v    All applicants must be a registered CASTA member during the time for which they are applying for an award.

v    The time frame for this award is August 1 to May 31 of the following year (i.e. August 21, 2009 until May 31 of 2010).

v    Applications must be submitted by June 15th.

v    An administrator’s signature is required on the application form to serve as verification that the criteria have been met.  (The one exception is in the case of private teachers.  These teachers must submit their information to Daryl Counsell and he will share the information with the committee.)

v    In order to be eligible to receive an award, an applicant must complete 6 out of 8 of the criteria.

v    Forms must be submitted to the CASTA Southern Representative by no later then June 15 to be eligible to receive the award.

v    Awards will be presented at the CASTA summer convention in July.

v    Members must submit their own application.

v    It is the Southern Representative’s responsibility to collect the nominations and to order the awards.

 

Exemplary Elementary Teaching Award

1.     Solo and Ensemble Participation – include date and location

2.     Effective recruiting – document the number of students in the building and the number of students in the program.  A minimum of 25% of the class enrollment must be involved in the class.

3.     Mentoring of new teachers – This may include student teachers, college interns, mentoring new teachers in your district in the induction program or helping out a new colleague.

4.     Evidence of good transition from elementary to middle level - numbers of kids continuing.

  1. Evidence of professional development – documentation from the school district or from the University where credit is earned
  2. Evidence of active advocacy for music in elementary buildings - participation in local concerts and festivals, classroom performances, meetings with principals and parents groups, etc.
  3. Leadership in the profession - Holding an office in a professional organization, district committees for music or teachers.  Presenter at state or national convention.
  4. Member of the Board of CASTA or service on one of the CASTA committees.

 

Exemplary Middle/Junior High Level Teaching Award

1.     Solo and Ensemble Participation – include date and location

2.     Effective recruiting –. document the number of students in the middle level program and the number of students who continue in the High School program. 

3.     Mentoring of new teachers – This may include student teachers, college interns, mentoring new teachers in your district in the induction program or helping out a new colleague.

4.     Evidence of good transition from Middle School/Junior High to High School - numbers of kids continuing. 

5.     Evidence of professional development – documentation from the school district or from the University where credit is earned.

6.     Evidence of active advocacy for music in your district or at the state level – (examples may include:  participation in local concerts and festivals, classroom performances, meetings with principals and parents groups, etc.)

Exemplary Private Teacher Award

1.  Students involved in Youth Symphony organizations –

     numbers submitted with application

2.  Evidence of Professional Development – documentation from

     workshops attended.

3.  Private Teacher assists in picking appropriate instruments for      

     the students playing ability.

4.  Participation in CCAP – date and location.

5.  Students applying/accepted into ASO or WSHOF- number of   

     students who apply and the number of students accepted

     submitted.

6.  Evidence of transition to college as a continuing player, if not   

     music major or minor.

7.     Students involved in their public school music program.

8.     Member of the Board of CASTA or service on one of the CASTA committees.

 

 

Exemplary University/College Professor

1. Support of the public school system – evidence of providing mentorship to public school teachers and students.

2.  Evidence of outstanding student achievement – student recital documentation and evidence of students receiving teaching or performance assignments upon completion of their degree.

3.  Evidence that the professor can work with students at varying levels.

4.  Evidence of Maintaining and Increasing numbers in the private studio.

  1. Evidence of professional development – documentation required.
  2. Leadership in the profession - Holding an office in a professional organization, district committees for music or teachers.  Presenter at state or national convention.
  3. Demonstrate Artistic Outreach during the time for which you are petitioning for an award.

8.  Member of the CASTA Board or service on one of the CASTA
