Colorado-ASTA NORTHERN REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE:
William Hinkie III
Dr.
William H. Hinkie III is a teacher of violin, viola, and cello for the New
Millennium Conservatory for Strings in Lafayette, Colorado. He is also the
principal violist of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra and a substitute violist
with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, the Boulder Philharmonic and the Fort
Collins Symphony. He teaches at the University of Northern Colorado as a string
education specialist. In addition to this, Dr. Hinkie is the Music Director for
the Commerce City Youth Orchestra. He has also served on the teaching faculties
of Tyler Junior College and Kilgore College. During the summers, Dr. Hinkie is
an artist faculty member at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen,
MI. Past teaching experiences include the faculties of the Cleveland Institute
of Music Preparatory Department, Artist-in-Residence at the Cleveland School of
the Arts, and faculty member of the St. Joseph School of Music in St. Paul, MN.
Dr. Hinkie has also coached chamber music at the Perlman Music program where he
worked with world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman.
As a performer, Dr. Hinkie has been a member of the Shreveport Symphony, the
Longview Symphony and was a principal violist for the Orchestra of the Pines. He
was also a member of the Tyler Classical Consort chamber music players. In
addition to this Dr. Hinkie has also served as assistant principal violist with
the Aspen Festival Orchestra as well as section violist with the Akron and Baton
Rouge symphonies.
Dr. Hinkie has an undergraduate degree in music education with an emphasis in
violin performance from Louisiana State University where he studied with Sally
O'Reilly. He then obtained a Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute
of Music in viola performance where he studied viola with Heidi Castleman and
chamber music with the Cavani String Quartet. Dr. Hinkie studied viola at the
University of Minnesota with Thomas Turner and Korey Konkol as well as chamber
music with Thomas Rosenberg. In addition to this, Dr. Hinkie was a four-time
fellowship recipient to the Aspen Music School where he was a teaching assistant
to the team teaching studio of Heidi Castleman, Ellen Rose, and Victoria Chiang.
