Campbell Harrison

Outstanding Teacher of the Year

Campbell Harrison
has been teaching in Adams District #12 for 19 years and presently teaches the
orchestra programs at Northglenn and Legacy High Schools. She has also taught at
Horizon High School, Thornton High School, Westlake Middle School, Thornton
Middle School, and Malley Elementary School in the district. She has organized
many district orchestra festivals, honor orchestra concerts, Adams County
Orchestra Festivals, summer orchestra programs and feeder school concerts. Each
of her high school orchestras perform at least twelve times per school year with
regular school concerts, receptions, Trick or Treat Streets, and public
performances.
Her orchestras hosted and performed with rock and roll violinist Mark Wood in
September. Campbell wants to provide a great variety of performances and
activities for her high school students. The high school orchestras have
consistently earned superior ratings at the CHSAA Large Group Contests,
Calvacade of Music Festival, and many other festivals. Many of her school
students have received superiors at the CHSAA Solo and Ensemble Contests,
participated in Colorado All State Orchestras, Western States Honor Orchestras
and have gone on to major in music in college. Students comment about Campbell’s
dedication, devotion, patience, helpfulness and passion for music. Legacy High
School Symphonic Strings have been invited to perform at the Colorado Music
Educators Conference this coming January.
Campbell Harrison received her Bachelor of Music Education from the University
of Colorado and a Masters of Arts in viola and string pedagogy from Brigham
Young University. Influential teachers have been Abraham Chavez, Oswald Lehnert,
Eugene Hilligoss and David Dalton. She is continually learning and building her
music and teaching skills. She has completed teacher training for the Suzuki
Violin method books 1 through 8. She has participated in advanced course work at
Colorado State University, University of Northern Colorado, University of
Denver, Ohio State University and University of Michigan. She has also attended
the National ASTA and International Viola Society Conferences.
During her 37 years of teaching strings, Mrs. Harrison has also taught in
schools in Boulder Valley, Longmont, and Ogden (Utah). She has taught Suzuki
violin lessons at Capital University (Ohio), Colorado Academy, and her studios
in Columbus, Ohio, Salt Lake City and North Denver Area. She had the privilege
of teaching at the Violin Making School in Salt Lake City. She has been a judge
for solo and ensemble contests in Jefferson County, Longmont, and Grand Junction
and judged for orchestra contests in Grand Junction and Colorado Springs.
As a violist, she has performed with the Columbus (Ohio) Symphony, Boulder
Philharmonic, Longmont Symphony, Jefferson Symphony, Mormon Youth Orchestra and
presently with the Denver Pops Orchestra. She has also sung with and been the
orchestra director for the Colorado Mormon Chorale. She conducted one of the
five Brigham Young University’s orchestras.
Mrs. Harrison is an active member in the American String Teachers Association,
Colorado Music Educators Association, Colorado Education Association, and
American Viola Society. She currently serves on the All State Orchestra Board
and has completed a three year term serving on the Colorado High School
Activities Music Committee representing all orchestra teachers in the Colorado.
She is also very active musically in her church. She has organized and conducted
numerous orchestras, solo performances, and church choirs. Other interests
beside her family are hiking, biking, gardening and reading. Mrs. Harrison is
married to John who has been an orchestra supporter for all these years and she
has 2 grown and married children who played in the orchestras during their
schooling at Northglenn High School.
